| Congratulations America!!!! Black Friday came and went with only 3 dead across the country!!!Thats not bad, eh, 3 lives for all those bargains, deals, and discounts?
I was struck with the stark difference between these 2 days. First, we have Thanksgiving. About 10:00 Thursday morning I hoped into my car, I drove down the road and observed blue skies and sunshine. The day had happiness written all over it. As I drove, I could not help but wave at the other vehicles that passed me by. Each of us had a destination in mind, that destination included good food, family, and a thoroughly thankful day spent with those we each hold dear. My first stop was my sister's house and I got to spend a precious few moments with her family before i returned to the road. My final destination was my girlfriend's sister's house. What a beautiful, peaceful day!
Contrast the previous paragraph with these 2 news articles: Good writers don't overstate their point, so I shall stop here. If you have read these 2 articles, I believe you will be thinking the same thing I am thinking.
What a contrast, the joy of Thanksgiving with the greed of American consumerism which finds its outlet in Black Friday. Of course, usually the people caught up with Black Friday don't even celebrate Thanksgiving, they are to busy standing in line for their stuff.
Disclaimer: I am not condemning those who shop on Black Friday. I almost did myself. I am condemning consumerism, the prevailing mentality in America today; a self-centered world view of greed. Black Friday is simply an outlet for those caught up in the riff-raff. If you live near Northeast Ohio and are looking for some clean holiday entertainment, check out the Christmas Music Spectacular. Great show, and you might even be able to pick my not-so-gorgeous face out of the crowd of 110 singers!
| Thought I should finally explain my banner, after it has been in place for more than a year.
"Somewhere south of logical but north of discombobulated"
First off, discombobulated is one of my favorite words, it's just so fun to say not? It kinda rolls off your tongue, and is an all around cool word. Some more of my favorites: warchestershire, portabella (and i actually don't even like those 2 food items, just the words). Okay I'll close this tangent because I can't think of any more off the top of my head.
So lets break the banner down: "somewhere south of logical". The first part of the statement means simply that logical is in the north, it is the top, it is that place where a writer is full of truth and wisdom and imparts it in a clear, orderly, concise fashion. It is that ideal to be striven for, but achieved by o so few.
The second part continues: "but north of discombobulated". So if logical is north, or at the top, then discombobulated is south, or at the bottom. Discombobulated means "confused or disconcerted; upset; frustrated" a sense of confusion. So in my banner, discombobulated is the exact opposite of logical. It is that place where a writer is full of jumbled, detached jargon which is presented in a distorting and unconnected manner. It is the epitome of what a writer seeks to avoid; the pith of America's lowered (through the entertainment craze) intellect.
And so you find me, amelancholymind, somewhere between those 2 poles. Exactly where I fit into the grand scale is a choice each reader makes for himself. Some days you may place me closer to esteemed Logic; and perhaps more often, you choose to place me somewhere closer to that abhored Discombobulated.
The choice is yours! | | |
| I don't delve into politics to often, right? Well here I go . . . .
Seems to me there is some much overdue praise and thank-you's owed to Mr. George W. Bush. Yes, that's the president known better to most as W the Countries Worst President ever.
About 1 1/2 to 2 years ago things were going pretty badly in Iraq, the death toll was increasing, insurgents were growing bolder and things looked ugly; every day the American public was treated to news headlines about the most recent soldier killed. Those events led to much public outcry, many more liberally minded people pushed to bring the troops home, this war is costing us too much, ect.
As the public outcry increased, Mr. Bush did an interesting thing . . . . He listened. Then not only did he face the problem, he went about addressing it. I don't have facts but I believe the "Surge" was the advice given by Military Generals (Petraeus maybe?). So Mr. Bush listened to his Generals and came up with the "Surge", although it was heavily opposed Mr. Bush believed in his plan and made it happen (like a good leader should).
So fast forward to today, Iraq is almost a non issue in todays news headlines. The media is on to such other topics as the Olympics, the Mormon Fundamentalists in Texas, the Election, Election, Election, and Election. In other words, the Surge worked, quite well actually.
And so Mr. Bush deserves our praise. He faced a crisis, listened to his experts, formed a plan, stuck to the plan, and solved the crisis. I am not saying Iraq is a bed of roses, but you cannot argue that the Surge did not accomplish its mission.
The funny thing is that we don't hear 1 single word of praise directed to our leader. Instead, he has one of the lowest (if not lowest ever) approval ratings in history. All you hear is people degrading him and talking about his mistakes and short comings; and yet here is something (a rather large something) that he handled very well, but he gets no words of thanks. Hmmmmmm . . . . .
There are many things the President has done that I disagree with, I'm not saying lets blindly bow before his majesty (in fact, I cannot support the war in Iraq because of my stand on non-resistence). I'm simply pointing out the hypocrisy of those involved in the political arena who cannot even admit that Mr. Bush did something well; because its obvious that he did.

Possibly my shortest post ever . . . .
What is the one thing about God that you
like the most?
This question popped into my mind several days ago. I think its
good to sit and reflect on your relationship with God and try to pinpoint one aspect
of God that amazes you.
As for me, I think the one thing I like the most about God is His consistency.
Sometimes I am in a great mood, sometimes I am having a good day, sometimes I
am feeling "blah", other times I am having a bad day, and then other
times I am just plain grumpy. But God is God and He doesn't change . . . . that
is uber-cool!
So now its your turn to answer the question . . . .
